Question: How to pick up small swarf in the workshop without sharp metal or other rubbish going into the vacuum cleaner bag?

It’s a hassle to clean out my workshop vacuum cleaner bag. Metal swarf tends to clip itself onto the fabric and I spend a lot of time picking off the bits individually.
Question: How to pick up small swarf in the workshop without sharp metal or other rubbish going into the vacuum cleaner bag?
Answer: Make a swarf sump which catches the swarf away from the vacuum bag.
Only the dust gets through. This is a quick little, easy-to-do project, one of those “Why didn’t I do this years ago?” jobs.

I used an old, catering-size instant coffee tin for my collection container (You could use a paint tin).
It is a reasonable size, has good metal thickness and a large removable lid to get access to empty the swarf. I had a Farquharpare vacuum hose in the “will be useful someday” pile.
In the tin lid, the inlet and outlet pipes were made from medium-wall water pipe. The inlet pipe which had the hose to take in the swarf was 40 mm long and the outlet pipe on the powered vacuum side was 80 mm long, with 40 mm of this inside the lid.
I machined the 80 mm piece of the metal pipe down internally so that the air-sucking hose that leads from the vacuum cleaner would fit into it. Then I drilled holes in the other end of the same piece of metal pipe which is the section to be suspended in the tin. The holes allowed the air still to be sucked through but the swarf is prevented from going down the hose into the vacuum bag.

Luckily, I have a divider attachment that allowed me to drill all the 4.5 mm holes neatly but it is just a case of drilling as many holes as you can, even randomly.
I suppose it would be possible to weld on some small-gauge mesh instead. To seal off the end of the section of pipe that takes the hose from the vacuum cleaner—it already had holes drilled in it to allow suction through—I just brazed-on an endplate and turned it down in the lathe.
I also had in my “use-one-day” pile some large washers (four required) which were pressed into service. I drilled fixing holes in them first before I brazed them onto the pipes.
The hose end that sucks up the swarf was a different diameter and not a tight fit to the metal pipe. I wondered about “filling the gap” to maintain the vacuum pressure but it worked perfectly once I just popped the hose on.
If you had an old vacuum hose with a click / twist-in style end fitting for the section that sucks up the swarf, you could drill a larger hole in the tin lid and maybe turn up a thickening plate. You then just put the hose in and twist-lock it on. For the assembly, cut two holes on the lid. Then drill through the bolt holes, make a cork (or whatever) gasket as the coffee tin lid is not smooth, bolt it together and give it a try.
As you can see from the photos, mine works perfectly.

A butterfly takes wing

This simple butterfly pendant or brooch (depending on the back fittings) is a very good exercise in several basic goldsmithing techniques. It also can be decorated in several different ways to produce strikingly different finished pieces of jewellery.
I drew this design more than 25 years ago for a company that then made paua-shell jewellery. They stamped out their products, so I often made the master patterns in copper and from these patterns they spark-eroded the dies.
If this design was being made in an art school, it would be stuck to a sheet of silver and the basic shapes cut from there. If a design was made this way in, say, 18-carat gold and the wing outlines (as here) made from 2.5 mm thick metal, the outlay and waste material would be considerable from a 2.5 mm-thick sheet of 18-carat gold plate. But we will make it like a professional craftsman who has to live in the real world where costs matter.

Making a clean sweep – how to make a magnetic sweeper

After mumblings of discontent about the potential punctures and those “messy engineers”, I decided to make a simple magnetic sweeper. The concept is not new. Magnets have been used for picking up road debris for a long time, and they are very effective.
The challenge, though, is where to find magnets that are strong enough, and how to effectively remove collected steel waste from the magnets. In an ideal world, it would be great to be able to turn the magnetism off and on.
This can be done, of course, by shifting the magnetic poles in the same way that magnetic chucks do on a surface grinder.
Very effective, but I couldn’t see our tool makers in the shed being happy to see the magnetic chuck from the surface grinder being “borrowed” to pick up nails.

Sentimental Journey
Jack Ryder had a unique ability to hypnotise sports stars, politicians, and celebrities into donating items for his museum and sports memorabilia collection. Now, his grandson Clint manages this West Auckland landmark, but the property development vultures are circling.
It is hard to imagine a less likely location for a living museum than the back blocks of suburban West Auckland in Avondale.

While the surrounding streets are turned into homogeneous multi-unit town housing, the Ryders’ two-acre slice of Pavlova Paradise remains, less a multi-generational home ground and more a celebration of the character of the city’s past.
Slipping through the tall white gates past the twin concrete lion sentinels at the street end of Ryder’s long hedge-lined driveway, the modern world slips away. Ahead, in the shade of a 100-year-old Pecan tree, an enclave of antique edifices opens out along the back-fence line like a set from a period movie. This corner of vintage Kiwiana is the handiwork of the late and industrious Jack Ryder, a coach-builder and wharfie, who began constructing it from a group of sheds spread across the property.
