Rust, me and CRC Evapo-Rust

My tools and machinery were housed in an unlined shed for a few years, resulting in plenty of surface rust. I tried removing it with abrasive products, but that involves an awful lot of manual labour and doesn’t always work well, not to mention the scratches it leaves on the tool's surface. So I looked for a decent rust killer. CRC Evapo-Rust had a reputation, so I gave it a go. Most of my affected tools were small enough to be immersed in the liquid. I had a container that I filled with Evapo-Rust, and an overnight immersion generally cleaned them up. The beauty of Evapo-Rust is that it’s reusable, so that container will last for the foreseeable future, probably a year for me.

The product also comes in a very handy one-litre container with its own basket.
This is ideal for smaller parts, bolts, nuts, and small machine bits. You can pop them in and leave them overnight, or longer if necessary. CRC Evapo-Rust won’t attack steel or wood.
It’s a workshop must-have for me; I wish I had known about it a long time ago, given the number of rusty bolts and nuts I have had to deal with.
I also had rust on a few machines; my bending brake had a fair bit of rust. It’s not practical to immerse anything that big, but CRC Evapo-Rust offers a convenient gel spray for vertical surfaces. Again, it’s an overnight soak to pristine as-bought goodness.

Raising the bar

I have wanted to make an elevating bar stool for some time. They are a relatively simple design – four legs attached to a nut through which an acme thread runs, raising and lowering the seat.
However, attaching the legs to the nut is problematic. The nut is usually a fairly large piece of steel, in this case it’s 38mm diameter, and even with the hole and threads cut it still has a wall thickness of nearly 10mm. The legs on the other hand have a wall thickness of only 2mm. That size differential makes using MIG welding difficult. It can be done of course but it isn’t quite as straightforward as usual.
I felt it was ideally suited to TIG welding and as I hadn’t tried TIG before I thought this might be a good opportunity to get some experience.

Up the wall

A friend loves gardening and has always wanted a vertical garden or ‘living wall’. She has been pestering me to build one ever since I started doing the welding articles for The Shed. I looked at a few and developed a simple concept that is simply an angle iron frame with a wire lattice.
I measured the wall it was to fit on and arrived at a final size of 1m x 1.6m. I
happened to have that on hand in 3mm angle iron. The vertical garden needs
to be offset to the wall to allow for air circulation and watering. I decided to offset it
by 60mm so that required 100mm feet.

Welding: Standing to attention

I moved recently and in the haste to pack I loaded my lathe complete with its stand. The stand, which is really just a couple of sheet-metal cabinets, didn’t really survive the move all that well and it was bent out of shape.
That didn’t really bother me since I have wanted to make a decent stand for the lathe since I got it, and include some drawers for tooling and other bits and pieces. Now that the lathe is in its permanent home I have my chance. This is just a small lathe but it weighs 250kg nonetheless.
I wanted to make something sturdy and solid that would serve to support the lathe without sagging and eliminate any vibrations.
